Flute's Journey: The Life of a Wood Thrush

Inside information from author Lynne Cherry
When I began writing Flute's Journey, I was going to put Flute in the woods at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center where I was then artist-in-residence. However, an ornithologist friend said, "put Flute in the Belt Woods!" "What's the Belt woods?" I asked. She told me it was a forest that had been owned by Seton Belt and he had willed it to a church if they agreed to never cut the trees or sell the land. But after he died, the church had the will overturned and put the land up for sale to a developer for $9 million. It's a long story, but many children wrote letters to the bishop of the church asking that they respect Seton Belt's wishes and save the land. And, I'm convinced, that it was their letters that saved Flute's home, the Belt woods. Their letters, like the following one, came from the heart: "Seton Belt trusted you. How can you go against him?" Our campaign to save the woods was covered by CBS Morning News with Charles Osgood and they mentioned Flute's Journey and the children's letters. They asked me what kids could do. I said, "they can write to the church." And so many more letters were sent. Now Belt Woods is preserved forever. Children helped to save Flute's home and children, in many ways, can make a difference in the world. Lynne Cherry

This book is soooo good!
It tells how hard the life of birds can be. I especially liked how it told about the cowbird who came and took one egg away because that tells the way cowbirds are. I liked how the children gaves names to the woodthrushes.

Every child and even most adults should read this book
This is a beautiful book! It provides ecological information that a child can understand. It has a strong message and is entertaining as well as educational. It has beatiful watercolor paintings and a compelling storyline. Enjoyable for parents and children.

GENISIS: The First Book of Revelations
Published in Hardcover by Adventures Unlimited Press (May, 1986)
Author: David Wood
Average review score:

A book that will seriously change your outlook on life.
The fact that 'Genisis - the First Book of Revelations' is still selling steadily after 14 years says a lot about its relevance to today's culture. It is a challenging book which stimulates the reader's thoughts and seriously provokes a re-examination of one's belief systems. Its claims may seem far-fetched but each one is backed up with evidence which weighs heavily on an open mind. The geometry, however, is pinned down and refined in his second book 'Geneset - Target Earth', where the seemingly exotic geometrical claims of 'Genisis' are fully substantiated in depth. A fascinating read at all levels and a 'must' for anyone with an intelligent and open mind. The third book 'Poussin's Secret' is also a fascinating, in-depth study of Poussin's 'les bergers d'arcadie', which involves the same geometry as divulged in 'Genisis' and 'Geneset'. All three books are readily available through Genisis Books, Fleet Litho, Park Farm Road, Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England.

A troubling and provocative reappraisal of ancient religion
Genisis is certainly a worthwhile book for those interested in geomancy and the emerging science of sacred sites. The author attempts to prove that certain Greek myths were, at least on one level, deliberately coded information regarding the origin of mankind. He supports his argument by the geometrical patterns created, presumably intentionally, by the placement in France of ancient sites devoted to religious cults. His claim that phallectomy, (No, I'm not kidding!), was an intrinsic part of certain ancient religious initiation rites seems farfetched, but nonetheless the book is a highly stimulating and most unusual presentation of the ancient astronaut genre.

A book that can alter your perception of history.
To begin with it is extraordinary that amazon.com have mis-spelled and incorrectly listed the title which is: GENISIS The First Book of Revelations. Also the subject matter is hardly categorized as "Religion". The book contains a phenominally well researched investigation into the mysteries surrounding Rennes-le-Chateau, a subject touched upon by the authors of "The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail", one of whom, Ian Campbell is also listed as the co-author of David Woods subsequent book "Geneset - Target Earth" which very neatly prefaces the Shoemaker Levi Comet's collision with Jupiter. All those who are fascinated by the scientific confirmation of the cause of the extinction of dinasours being the collision of a comet on earth will be well advised to try to acquire these tiltles.

terrific
This is the a prototype for all other historical railroad books combining a fairly comprehensive selection of high quality photographs and well written informative text. Certainly a must for anyone interested in the Great Northern Railway.

The bible of Great Northern Railway history
This book by Charles Wood is the authoritative history of the Great Northern Railway. As a long time GN fan and director of the GNRY Historical Society, I can tell you no other book on this subject comes close. You will enjoy the format of many photograghs, informative captions and accurate text. It is the "bible" for GN fans.

Fred W. Black, Mill Creek, WA. USA

A must-read for Great Northern Railroad fans
A comprehensive history of the Great Northern Railroad. A "loving" tribute to a truly great railroad which never fell into receivership like many of the other large roads (such as the Pennsylvania and New York Central). Included are hundreds of photos and memorabilia. If you're a fan of the Great Northern, or even railroads in general, you'll love this book...if you can find it! It is currently out-of-print

Haunted Delaware: Delightfully Dreadful Legends of the First State
Published in Paperback by Buy Books on the web.com (2000)

HAUNTED DELAWARE
This young woman has you on the ege of your seat!! At 15 she wrote this book, I can only imagine (and hope),for more ,from this extremly talented author.

A Good Quick Read
This is a very artfully written, good book! Even thought I live in Delaware, this book would be entertaining even for someone who lives in another state. I read it in one day and I enjoyed the whole thing. I hope Ms. Woods writes a sequel.

Smashing debut by a very talented teenager!!
If you're in the mood for a good shiver, read this one alone at night! The author, a 16-year-old prodigy, has a flair for dramatic imagery. Most adults would be proud to "set the stage" the way she does! She also has a wonderful way of taking historical facts and adding (in italics) her own imaginative details. In sum, Haunted Delaware is the most entertaining book of ghost stories that I have ever read. I hope Ms. Woods writes another book soon!

Henry David Thoreau : A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers / Walden; Or, Life in the Woods / The Maine Woods / Cape Cod (Library of America)

Are you in the spring? But I am in the winter.
Well, do you think that you don't keep up with others when you can not do something which everyone can do?

I would let you know that leave your life. Absolutely, it is not necessary to change your season for keeping up with others. There is certain rhythm to fit you. Sometimes we make ourselves the one with a sense of relief supposing we do the same thing that others do. There is not a way when you go behind someone. Also, when you go with others' shadow.

Excellent quality reading
Of the books that I own, this one is the best prepared and printed. It is also very complete rather than a scattering of selections. I recommend it highly to the curious Thoreau reader.

Thoreau's best
Four of Thoreau's best works come to life in their full and unabridged versions. Thoreau portrays a land of immense natural beauty, and his keen observations focus on subjects as diverse as native plants and animals to his musings on the peculiar people he meets. Thoreau's revelations on conservation show us he was a century ahead of his time, aware of a landscape and nation which was already irreversibly changing. Yet his simple life at Walden pond shows us that we are perhaps most content with ouselves when we are the most alone and unencumbered. Contains a brief chronology of Thoreau's life which presents us with many previously unknown facts. Each work in this collection has been available before, but the Library of the America's has researched and investigated the most accurate materials and corrected errors contained in previous publishings.

How to Get Kids to Eat Great & Love It!

This book is fantastic!
The book is a terrific guide and reference source for nutrition and creating healthy eating habits. It spans a child's needs from birth to adolescence. The sections on Environmental Bad Guys and the Antioxidant Good Guys are very informative yet not overbearing with scientific terms. It is so important to create healthy lifestyle for children and this book does it by teaching you the parent the fundamentals.

Great Book!
I was given this book after my wife and I had our first son. We read this book from front to back and still use it as a reference. By using what we read, our son doesn't enjoy a lot of processed foods, but loves to eat fruits and even vegetables! This is quite a change from my sister-in-law's kids who love chicken nuggest and MacDonalds. Also, because we have changed the diet for our son, my wife and I have found ourselves eating better. If you have friends or family with children, or who are expecting, I highly recommend this book for them.

A superbly written nutrition guide for parents
Now in an updated and expanded second edition, How To Get Kids To Eat Great And Love It! by practicing physician and nutrition expert Christine Wood is a superbly written nutrition guide for parents seeking to ensure their children eat properly and happily. A MUST for every parent
I bought this book shortly after the birth of my daughter, now 15 months old. My family has a history of weight & heart problems and I wanted to break this cycle. I don't want my daughter to face these issues as an adult. I read this book from cover to cover and continue to refer to it on a regular basis. My daughter doesn't eat sugar or processed foods. My family & friends can't get over the fact that she eats tofu, fruits & vegetables. They can't understand why their kids won't. As a result of establishing a diet for my daughter, my husband & I have had to make changes ourselves. My daughter is extremely healthy & happy. I have learned so much about the benefits of organic foods & a diet rich in fruits & vegetables. You'll also be amazed at what kids DON'T need in their diets (hot dogs, chicken nuggets, chips, soda!) I buy this book for all my friends that are expecting. If you truly want to give your child a gift, give them the gift of good health. This book will guide you, simply & thoroughly, in that process. I know my daughter has gotten a healthy start in life because I've applied this information to our lives.

Great information on nutrition for everyone
Getting kids to eat well is always a challenge, but Dr Wood gives some great ideas for all ages. The book has easy to understand information on diet and nutrition and tips to help the whole family eat wiser. This would make a great gift for a new mom.

The book gives practical, easy to follow advice.
When my son was born, I checked out many of the popular books for new mothers. Although there are many good titles out there, I couldn't really find one book that dealt with all the questions I had about the topic that comes up most frequently - FEEDING! The other well known books, such as What to Expect In Your First Year, and Your Baby & Child have so much information that it's hard to consult them for simple, easy to find guidelines on food. This book has been a real help for me now that my son is starting on solids. The author is a practicing pediatrician and it's evident in the practical and real life nature of her advice. The other great thing about it is that the author never condescends to the reader - she includes all of the nutritional background for her advice.

I'll be giving this book as a gift, and not only for new parents. The book covers kids through adolescence - that's something that the other child-rearing volumes definitely don't offer.

In a Tangled Wood: An Alzheimer's Journey
Published in Paperback by Southern Methodist Univ Pr (October, 1996)
Authors: Joyce Dyer and Ian Frazier
Average review score:

Must be read by anyone who loves his or her mother...
Joyce Dyer is a masterful writer, and In A Tangled Wood is some of her very best work. Though many find the subject of Alzheimer's Disease to be taboo or distasteful, Ms. Dyer presents her family's journey through her mother's AD years in such loving and personal terms it is impossible to feel anything but tremendous respect for everyone involved.

Dyer uses cunningly descriptive metaphors throughout the book, as well as well-placed bits of comic relief in what could have easily become a much too depressing story. She reveals enough of herself personally to allow the reader to understand how she and her mother developed the relationship they had. While this is a story about a woman who has AD, it's also a story about a daughter's relationship with her mother - regardless of any illness. It reveals what we children can and will do for our parents when the tables (ultimately) turn.

It is a tale of courage and faith, of patience and hope, of acceptance and love.

Personal Account Makes the Difference
Ms. Dyer's account of her own mother's illness is really what made the difference for me in this book. I am not touched by alzheimer's disease yet, so I have no basis of engagement or interest. But something about this book told me I'd enjoy it, and I was right.

Ms. Dyer's MO is to simply present her story about her mother intertwined with the stories of other people in the home with her mother. She reflects on her mother's past, on their shared pasts, on her own past. She doesn't ever get overly weepy, but Dyer does present her feelings as her mother decays further and further away from her true self. Overall, though, you feel that Dyer was happy to be able to experience this trying time with her mother, and you get a glimpse of the strength that it must have taken to come back to the home each day.

It's clear that writing about her experiences is therapy. But reading about them is therapy, too; it forces you to think about "something else," something more grave than whether you should handwash that plate and whether the lawn needs another cut. In reality, Dyer reveals many issues of the basic human condition that are grounds for thoughtful discussion and planning.

I enjoyed every bit of the book. The personal account format really drew me in, and the reality and emotion kept me reading.

The best book I've read on the subject of Alzheimer's
I've read them all and this is the best. Don't be afraid to read it thinking it will be "depressing". This book is uplifting, funny and very human.

In the Ocean (A Nature Trail Book)
Published in Hardcover by Templar Publishing (27 July, 2000)
Authors: A.J. Wood and Maurice Pledger
Average review score:

Outstanding book!
My son recieved this book as a gift and he simply loves it! He's not quite 2 and he knows all the fish in the book and has even made up a few (he insists the spotted fish is a "giraffe" fish!). But - the real proof of the learning value of his book happened just yesterday. We were at the Nature Center, and they have a salt-water tank. As soon as he saw it he raced to it, pointing, excited and telling me, "Mama! A lionfish! A lionfish!" And sure enough - there was a "stripy-spiky lionfish", just like in the book! I couldn't believe at his age that he could make the connection between the picture in the book and the real thing, but he did! Obviously, this book has real educational value. I recommend it to ALL parents! And I'm here to buy a few other "Nature Trail" books today...

This is a fantastic book!
What a GORGEOUS book! "Little silver dolphin" is lost; join him on an underwater journey of discovery as he searches for his family. This book is instantly engaging mostly due to the tactile treasures and OUTSTANDING illustrations, but the prose is pleasing and educational too. "The tiny, SHINY flying fish go swimming through the air. Now lift the flap and you will see what else is leaping there." The reader lifts the flap, "A sailfish with fins of BLUE. And Mother Dolphin's somewhere too!" In smaller print, the author includes lessons on numbers and counting, "How many flying fish can you count?" and "Can you find the mother dolphin?"

This is a "touch and feel" book with lessons on marine life, colors, numbers and counting. The images, beautifully rendered, are beset with pattern and fine details, not to mention the union between the "touch and feel" items and the illustrations on the "half-page flaps" are exceptional. Additional textures include: FURRY sea otter, SCALY shinny fish, PRICKLY pink coral, LUMPY lobster shell, NEON darting fish, SMOOTH skinned shark, and SOFT silver dolphin. Recommended for 4 to 8 years old, but my 1 year old adores this book and finds the textures and images irresistible. "In the Ocean," is a fantastic book!

In the Ocean
We found this to be a delightfully illustrated book that captivated our three year old daughter. The book follows the journey of a young dolphin as it searches for its mother. On the way the dolphin encounters colorful fish and sealife. The book encourages counting, has beautiful textures incorporated with the illustrations, and overall is very interactive. Be prepared to read this wonderful book over and over to your child!
